IMPERFECTLY PERFECT // Sophie Monet
Los Angeles isn't short on talented artists. It truly is what makes it a great place to live. I'm very grateful to have met the exquisitely skillful jeweler and designer Sophie Monet, who as a Los Angeles native, incorporates a style and aesthetic into her creations that feels uniquely modern, Californian, and timeless all within the same gorgeous pieces.
She works mostly from scrap wood in her fathers workshop studio (he's a sculptor), and shares an office with her sister. I couldn't be more inspired by the whole of her operation, and working together with family. It feels so special in this day in time where everyone is so spread out.
She's the embodiment of nourishing your beauty with sustainable jewelry that feels so good to wear, and makes you feel beautiful.
Thank you Sophie.
3 Word Bio.
methodical, adventurous, classic
What is your one physical characteristic that you’ve had to grow to love, but at times would have changed?
I have a big beauty mark on my left cheek. I’ve always liked it but growing up I was teased for it and told I should get it removed. It’s really just become part of who I am. I call it my Cindy Crawford mole.
What would anyone you’ve ever lived with say is your least appealing quality?
What is the hardest part about working for yourself?
Having the confidence and trust to let go. I juggle so many different roles that I find it hard to decide when it’s the right time to pass duties on to other people. I really have to ask myself, how can I make more time for myself, grow the business and be more productive? The answer is simple. By asking for help and finding the right people to assist and manage different projects. It’s hard to let go and ask for help but it can also be the most rewarding.
Does your creativity come naturally or do you need to work at it?
I’m constantly working on finding inspiration and themes for new collections. Something as small as taking a day trip to a new neighborhood can refresh my headspace and bring about new ideas for designs. I love architecture and recently went to The Schindler House on Kings Road. He plays a lot with spatial relationships defined by interior/exterior spaces. I love the long, clean lines of wood, cold cement and the mini fireplaces in each room.
With 30 minutes of free time, what would you do?
Go for a walk to the beach and watch the sunset.
If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
I would give everyone access to free healthcare.
Honestly, packrat or minimalist?
Minimalist
What keeps you up at night?
The helicopters flying over Venice Beach.
